This adapter is most commonly used to screw into the base of many David White, Berger, and K&E Level-Transits (as pictured) to make it compatible with a modern-day tripod with 5/8" x 11 thread core screw. It has a male thread with outside diameter of 3-1/2" x 8 threads per inch and screws into the female base of these level-transits. The inner female thread of this adapter has a diameter of 5/8" x 11 threads per inch and accepts most modern tripods sold today with a standard core screw of 5/8" x 11. This adapter is an economical alternative to those hard-to-find and expensive David White Tripods used with this style of insturment.
