VINTAGE EARLY MAX HILDEBRAND AUGUST LINGKE FREIBERG THEODOLITE WITH WOODEN BOX 1900
Max Hildebrand was a son of Falkenberger manor owner and later Sorauer station manager Karl Hildebrand and his wife Emma, née Lemm. After completing his apprenticeship, Max Hildebrand first worked as a precision mechanic at Pistor & Martins in Berlin, later in Paris, where he represented the company at the 1867 World Fair. To be able to observe the solar eclipse on 18 August 1868 optimally, he joined an expedition to Siam. Afterwards, Hildebrand gained professional experience in England before returning to Berlin to found his own workshop. He sought contacts with the Berlin Observatory, the Imperial Normal Verification Commission and the General Staff of the Military.
In 1873 Max Hildebrand moved to the Saxon Freiberg; Here he became a partner in the precision engineering workshop August Lingke & Compagnie, later Hildebrand & Schramm. In 1873 he participated in discussions of Generals Helmuth John Ludwig von Moltke, Otto von Morozowicz and the director of the observatory Wilhelm Foerster, which later led to the founding of the Physical-Technical Imperial Institute. He rejected the request he had received to open a workshop in Berlin. In 1895 Hildebrand was appointed a member of the board of trustees of the Reichsanstalt. Many well-known precision mechanics learned at Hildebrand.
